Training, mentorship, and funding for small businesses

Kingston, Ontario, July 30, 2020 — Kingston Economic Development Corporation announces 11 successful recipients of grants up to $5,000 from the Starter Company Plus program.

Starter Company Plus is offered through Kingston Economic Development Corporation with funding from the Government of Ontario. The program is designed to provide training, coaching, and mentoring for business owners who are launching or have been in business for less than five years. The program provides an opportunity to pitch for up to $5,000 to support business operations.

“In the closing of our Spring Starter Company program I’m pleased to see that we were able to provide some level of grant funding to 11 young businesses this spring. In light of the economic effects of COVID-19, we amended our programming to provide funding at various levels. As we have historically only provided grants for the top 7 businesses, this flexibility has allowed us to reach more businesses in need,” says Ian Murdoch, Business Development Officer, Business Retention & Expansion. “Looking forward to our next intake period where new applicants will be accepted and previously unsuccessful participants are welcome to sharpen their tools and apply for a second time.”

Participants attended a week long virtual business bootcamp, where they received valuable insights into business start-up and expansion as well as business templates such as cash flow projections and business plans.

"Building a company is already a daunting feat for many individuals, but when coupled with a global pandemic, it's exponentially more difficult. The Starter Company Plus program did an incredible job helping Bounce focus on adapting to these unprecedented times and how to continue building a sustainable business- all in a time efficient manner," says Sean Monteiro, founder of Bounce and a successful Stater Company Plus applicant.

There will be another Starter Company Plus offering in the fall of 2020, applications will open September 1, 2020. Visit to learn more.
