Kingston Economic Development is pleased to offer three Food Venture programs, which offers educational bootcamps based on design thinking with experiential workshops for food & beverage entrepreneurs.

The Food Venture Bootcamp – From the Idea to Your Food Venture in Just 12 Weeks

Have you had an idea to start your own food and beverage -based startup for a while and never knew how and where to start from? Do you have an idea that is ready to be developed into a food and beverage startup right now? 

This 12 weeks Food Venture Bootcamp is the program you must apply for today. This is a new entrepreneurship program for food and beverage potential and early stage start-up entrepreneurs. Explore, write your business plan and receive mentorship from Canada’s best food ventures mentors.  
Th program is designed to accommodate 20 people only. The 20 people will be selected from a first come first serve basis, and mini virtual-pitching sessions of the ideas to our team. We want to support and guide members of our community who are ready to start and execute. This program will run in a 3-hour session per week for 12 weeks. 

Important Dates:

  • Application deadline: Wednesday, January 20, 4 pm
  • Approval and notification of participants: Friday, January 23 (Only 20 seats available)
  • Program start date: Thursday, January 28, 6 pm - 9 pm

All training sessions are held on Thursdays from 6 pm - 9 pm.

During this 12-week program, you will learn:

  • Idea feasibility and food trends
  • Value proposition and business plan
  • Circularity and sustainability in food processing
  • Competitive analysis, constraints and channels 
  • Food science and recipe development
  • Guidelines for food packaging and labelling
  • Sanitation and food safety
  • Financial feasibility and recipe costing
  • Sales for food services, retail and preparing a pitch
  • Mentorship and pitch feedback
  • Pitch submission 
  • Pitch competition 

The 5 Weeks Restaurant Pivot to Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG)

You have been running a restaurant, and you have a selected assortment of recipes that many of your clients would like to buy? You have been thinking about when to launch your own recipes’ and spices’ brands? 

This 5-weeks restaurant pivot to CPG program is a great fit for you. Selected the goods you would like to package, think about which e-commerce platform you want to use to sell them or integrate them in your existing restaurant, and register to this program.  
Th program is designed to accommodate 20 participants. The 20 people will be selected from a first come first serve basis. This program is run in a 3-hour session per week for 5 weeks. 

Important Dates:

  • Application deadline: Wednesday, January 20, 4 pm
  • Approval and notification of participants: Friday, January 23 (Only 20 seats available)
  • Program start date: Tuesday, January 26, 9:30 am - 12 pm

All training sessions are held on Tuesday from 9:30 am - 12 pm.

During this 5-week program, you will get learn about:

  • Circularity and sustainability in food processing
  • Food science and recipe development
  • Guidelines for food packaging and nutrition labelling
  • Food products sales for food services, retail 
  • Brand identify and social media marketing

The 5 Weeks Tourism Recovery Initiative

This program is for you if you have a food and beverage business or a farm product that could be well positioned and maximize its revenues from the tourism industry both local and regional. There is an extra focus on selling and promoting local from a tourism angle. 

This 5 weeks tourism recovery initiative program is designed to accommodate 20 people only. The 20 people will be selected from a first come first serve basis. This program will run in a 3-hour session per week for 5 weeks. 

Important Dates:

  • Application Deadline: Wednesday, January 20, 4:00 pm
  • Approval and notification of participants: Friday, January 23 (Only 20 seats available)
  • Program Start Date: Thursday, January 28, 9:30 am - 12 pm

All training sessions are held on Tuesday from 9:30 am - 12 pm.

During this 5-week program, you will learn:

  • Circularity and sustainability in food processing
  • Food science and recipe development
  • Guidelines for food packaging and nutrition labelling
  • Brand identify and social media marketing
  • Food products sales for food services, retail

Bonus! With the successful completion of any of the Food Venture programs, we will support your application to the Ontario Government Starter Company Grant up to $5,000 to start or expand your food processing, manufacturing or catering business.

Criteria to Pitch for up to $5,000:

  • Participants must attend all training sessions
  • Participants must attend all mentoring sessions
  • Participants must complete all training and mentoring, submit a business plan and pitch deck to qualify to pitch for a Grant up to $5,000

The Starter Company Plus competition grants will be disbursed in Spring 2021.
